Most locksmith calls are about a house, an office or a car. A steady share are about everything else: a safe that will not open, a filing cabinet with no key, a mailbox, a storage unit, a bike lock, a laundry coin box, a display case or an antique desk. These jobs use the same skills, but each type of lock has its own construction, its own rules about who can authorize the work, and its own sensible limits.
This page is a guide to those services. Each section links to a page with the detail.
Safes are opened, serviced and re-coded rather than broken into wherever possible. A safe with a forgotten combination or a failed electronic keypad can often be opened without damage, and the lock can then be reset or replaced so the safe is usable again.
Work on safes includes:
Proof of ownership is required before a safe is opened. For a safe in a rental property, an estate or a business premises, the person who owns its contents authorizes the work.
Filing cabinets, desks, lockers, display cases and many mailboxes use cam locks: a small cylinder that turns a flat metal cam behind the door. They are measured by the cylinder length and the cam shape, and they can be keyed alike so one key opens a whole office of cabinets.

Mailbox locks are cam locks with an extra question attached: who is responsible for the lock. A private mailbox on a house belongs to the owner. In apartment and condo buildings, the mailbox locks usually belong to the landlord or corporation. Canada Post community mailboxes are handled by Canada Post.
When the lock is yours to change, a broken key can be removed and the cylinder replaced or rekeyed. The details are on mailbox lockouts and broken keys.
Storage facilities each have their own rules for opening a unit when the key or code is lost. Most require the tenant to show identification and the rental agreement at the office first, and some require their own staff to be present. We open the lock only once the facility has confirmed the tenant's right to the unit. See storage unit lockout service and, for U-Haul units and trucks, U-Haul storage lockout.
Operators of storage facilities have a different set of needs, from overlock systems to master-keyed cylinders. Those are covered on self-storage facilities: locks and access.
When a bike lock key is lost, the lock can usually be picked, decoded or cut, depending on its type. A light cable lock and a hardened U-lock are very different jobs. The person asking needs to show the bike is theirs, typically a purchase receipt, a registration record or a photograph of themselves with the bike. See bicycle lock out service, and for choosing a better lock afterwards, choosing a bike lock.
Coin-operated washers and dryers in apartment buildings and laundromats use small high-security cam locks on the coin box. Owners and building managers call when keys are lost, a lock is jammed, or keys have been held by too many people. Coin-box locks are usually rekeyed or replaced as a set, and the keys are kept under tighter control than suite keys. See washing machine locks.
Older homes and furniture carry hardware that is no longer made: mortise locks with skeleton keys, rim locks, warded cabinet locks and decorative escutcheons. These can often be cleaned, repaired and fitted with new keys rather than replaced.
A lost safe deposit box key is handled through the bank, which controls the box and decides how it is opened. Executors dealing with a deceased person's box need the bank's process as well. See lost safe deposit box key.
Wireless garage door keypads, smart doorbells and similar devices sit at the edge of lock work. We replace and set up keypads, change codes, and fit smart doorbells, and we make sure the device does not interfere with the lock on the door it sits beside. See garage door keypad and smart doorbell installation.
Describe the lock as well as you can: what it is fitted to, any brand or code stamped on it, whether you have a working key, and what has gone wrong. A photograph of the lock face and the key often tells us what the job involves before anyone arrives. Have proof of ownership or authorization ready, because every one of these jobs requires it.
