Doors seem to have their own set of problems.  Even if you have had them in your home or office for years, suddenly it seems they are not working correctly.  Here are some common problems.

  • Won’t Stay Closed – You close a door to a room and minutes later you walk by just to see it has re-opened.  You can keep closing it, harder and harder, or put something heavy to keep it closed, which is inconvenient and dangerous, or you can fix the hinge.
This is an issue with the hinge.
Somehow the door is out of alignment with the strike plate (where the latch fits into the hole that keeps the door shut).
It can be from excessive use. It can be fixed by adjusting the top hinge but a more long term solution is to replace it with a continuous hinge, which is stronger and more durable over time.
  • Door dragging on the threshold or carpeting – The weight of the door or excess traffic is making the hinge fail. Installing a half or full surface continuous hinge will fix the problem and will be able to withstand a heavy workload over time.
  • Drafts – You are noticing more air blowing through the gap of the door.  First you need to find the gap.  If it is at the bottom, replacing the weather stripping will do the trick.
If the door is now out of alignment, the best choice is to replace the hinge so it returns to flush with the door frame.

Continuous Hinges are the best option for commercial doors

Sometimes it is difficult to know when a hinge needs replacement because it can happen gradually.
If you have concerns, one of the best hinges is a continuous hinge, sometimes called a piano hinge.
It will provide greater stress relief than butt or pivot hinges because it provides strength along the entire length of the door.
With better distribution of weight, future problems are greatly reduced.
Additional advantages include less disruption from environmental conditions and they provide greater security and privacy.

Continuous hinges come in different strengths depending on the amount of use and size or weight of the door.

FAQs Continuous Installation

A standard 24-inch continuous piano hinge can hold a weight of 60 pounds max with a spread of 2.5 pounds per one inch of the hinge. So, typically, when using a two-inch continuous plastic piano hinge, it can bear a weight of 100 pounds per linear inch.

We can easily alter a continuous hinge at the GTA Lockman to conform to the desired needs. Hence, we can cut a continuous hinge to the length needed without the hinge losing its durability.

It depends on the model you use for a continuous hinge to open 180 degrees. For example, an Ives 112HD/224HD one will provide a few degrees shy of the complete 180-degree opening. While an Ives 112XY/224XY one will open the full 180 degrees.

Compared to using short butt hinges, the advantage of using continuous hinges is that you have no rebating needed when fitting the hinge to the surface of both the door and the frame. You can cut down the continuous hinge to match the entire length of your door, as it provides alignment over the whole length and even the distribution of the load.

The benefit of using continuous hinges is that it extends over the entire length of your door. This means that the hinge distributes the door weight evenly to a frame. It reduces the stress on the doorframe when you compare it to your standard pivot hinge.
