Cadillac keys by generation

Cadillac is part of General Motors, and its keys follow GM's key families, with some features of their own. Which key your vehicle uses depends on the model, the year and often the trim level, so two Cadillacs from the same year can need different keys.

Broadly, Cadillac keys fall into three groups:

  • Transponder keys with a separate remote. Common on older models such as the DeVille, the early CTS and the first Escalade generations. The key has a chip for the immobilizer, and the lock and unlock buttons are on a separate fob.
  • Remote and flip keys. Some mid-generation models used a key with the blade and remote buttons combined, including flip-style keys on certain trims.
  • Proximity smart keys. Most current Cadillacs, including the Escalade, XT4, XT5, XT6, CT4 and CT5, use a proximity fob with keyless entry and push-button start. Earlier models such as the SRX and STS offered keyless access on some trims too.

The reliable way to identify the right key is the VIN. It tells the technician which fob, chip and programming method the vehicle expects. General background on key types is on car key types.

Proximity fobs and push-button start

Ask about a replacement key →

A Cadillac proximity fob does three jobs: it unlocks the doors when you approach or touch the handle, it allows the engine to start with the button, and it carries the lock, unlock, trunk or liftgate, panic and often remote-start buttons.

Inside most fobs is a mechanical emergency key. It slides out and opens the driver's door if the fob battery dies. On many models the door lock cylinder sits behind a small cap on the handle, which has to be removed first.

If the fob battery is weak, the vehicle may report that no key is detected. Most Cadillacs still start if the fob is placed in the designated spot in the console or cupholder, or held against the start button. The owner's manual shows the location for each model. A fresh battery solves many fob problems before any programming is needed.

03

Adding a spare

01

Adding a spare while you still have a working key is the simplest Cadillac key job. The new fob or key is cut, if it has a blade, and programmed to the vehicle alongside the existing key, which keeps working.

02

Many GM programming procedures require security access through a diagnostic tool, and some include a timed security wait before the vehicle accepts a new key. That waiting period is part of the manufacturer's process, not a delay on our side, and it is one reason key programming is booked as a proper appointment.

03

A spare is worth having on a vehicle with a proximity key. If the only fob is lost, the replacement becomes an all-keys-lost job, which is more involved.

When every key is lost

If no working key is left, a replacement is usually still possible at the vehicle's location. The emergency blade is cut by code or by decoding the door lock, and a new fob is programmed to the vehicle. Programming also removes the lost keys from the vehicle's memory where the procedure allows it, so they no longer start the car.

Some model years and trims require dealer-level access for all-keys-lost programming. The VIN tells us before the visit whether that applies, so you are not left with a half-finished job. The general steps are on lost car keys with no spare.

05

Remotes, shells and remote start

Not every key problem needs a new key:

  • Worn or cracked fob shell. The electronics can often be moved into a new shell, keeping the existing programming.
  • Buttons that work intermittently. Often a battery or a worn contact rather than a failed fob.
  • Factory remote start. Built into many Cadillac fobs and programmed with the fob itself.
  • Aftermarket remote start. Installed systems usually have their own separate fob and are programmed through that system, not the vehicle.

A fob that unlocks the doors but will not start the car, or the reverse, usually means one part of its programming is missing rather than that the fob has failed.

06

Ignition and door lock problems

On older Cadillacs with a turn-key ignition, a key that sticks, will not turn or turns without starting can point to a worn ignition cylinder or a worn key. A key that has worn smooth can sometimes be recut from code, which often restores normal operation. See car ignition repair.

Door lock cylinders on vehicles that rarely use the key can seize from lack of use. They still matter, because the emergency blade is the way in when a fob battery fails.

Chevrolet and GMC vehicles share many of the same key families and procedures, though the fobs themselves differ. See Chevrolet key replacement and GMC key replacement.

08

What to have ready

Have the VIN, the vehicle registration or ownership documents, and identification that matches. Tell us whether you have a working key, what kind it is, and where the vehicle is parked. If you are not sure which key the vehicle uses, a photograph of an existing key or the start button area helps. Booking details are on car key replacement.

Questions about cadillac key and fob replacement

Often, yes. Many Cadillac proximity fobs can be programmed on site with the right tool. Some model years or all-keys-lost situations still need dealer-level access, which the VIN helps identify.

Can a Cadillac smart key be programmed without the dealer?

Often, yes. Many Cadillac proximity fobs can be programmed on site with the right tool. Some model years or all-keys-lost situations still need dealer-level access, which the VIN helps identify.

Why does adding a Cadillac key take time?

Many GM procedures require security access and some include a timed security wait before the vehicle accepts a new key.

My Cadillac says no key detected. What should I do?

Replace the fob battery first. Most models will still start if the fob is placed in the designated spot or held against the start button, as shown in the owner's manual.

Where is the emergency key on a Cadillac fob?

Inside the fob. It slides out and opens the driver's door. On many models the lock cylinder is behind a small cap on the door handle.

Can I get a replacement if I lost all my Cadillac keys?

Usually. A new fob is programmed to the vehicle and the emergency blade is cut by code or by decoding a lock. The lost keys are removed from the vehicle's memory where the procedure allows.

Can a broken fob shell be replaced?

Often. The electronics can usually be moved into a new shell, keeping the existing programming.

Does my remote start fob need separate programming?

A factory remote start button is part of the fob. Aftermarket remote start systems usually have their own fob and are programmed through that system.

What do I need to bring?

The VIN, registration or ownership documents, matching identification, and any working key you still have.
