Cylinder-based door knob sets use a removable pin-tumbler or interchangeable core cylinder that can be extracted and replaced independently of the knob body. This design is common in apartment buildings, offices, and commercial properties in North York and Scarborough where property managers need to change individual cylinders regularly without replacing the entire knob set. When a tenant moves out, the cylinder is swapped rather than the hardware. Keypad and smart knob locks replace the standard keyed cylinder with a numeric or touchscreen pad that accepts a programmed access code. Models from Schlage Encode and Kwikset Halo include Wi-Fi connectivity so access codes can be added or removed remotely from a smartphone. Installation involves the same standard 2-1/8-inch cross-bore as a conventional knob set, so most existing door preparations accept a keypad knob without modification. Commercial-grade knob and lever sets are rated under ANSI/BHMA standards at Grade 1 (heavy commercial) or Grade 2 (general commercial). They use heavier internal components, longer cycle ratings, and optional fire-rated trim to meet Ontario Building Code requirements for exit doors and stairwell access in commercial buildings.
