Keypad locks replace the traditional key cylinder with a numeric entry pad. Instead of carrying a physical key, the user enters a code to operate the lock. This removes the most common causes of a residential or commercial lockout: a lost key, a stolen key, or a copied key that ends up with the wrong person. When a code is compromised, it can be changed without replacing the hardware or calling a locksmith.

A traditional key cylinder has several well-known failure points. A keypad address all of them.
The most common reason people call a locksmith is a lost or forgotten key. A keypad removes that problem entirely. There is no physical key to misplace, leave at a friend’s house, or drop in a parking lot. Entry depends on knowing a code, which cannot be lost the way a key can.
A standard key can be copied at any hardware store in under a minute. A keypad code cannot be duplicated. Only the person who knows the code can use it, and if the code is shared with someone who should no longer have access, changing the code takes a few seconds without any hardware replacement or locksmith call required.
A traditional pin tumbler cylinder can be picked with basic tools and some practice. A keypad lock has no keyway to pick and no shear line to manipulate. Entry requires the correct code. Models that include a physical key override cylinder can still be rekeyed by a locksmith to further restrict access if needed.
Keypad locks fall into two main categories. Electronic keypad locks use a battery-powered circuit to operate the locking mechanism. They typically include a backlit numeric pad and may offer additional features such as auto-lock timers, multiple user codes, tamper alerts, and Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity for remote access. Most electronic models include a physical key override as a backup entry method.
Mechanical keyless locks use a push-button mechanism that requires no power source. They are simpler in design, have no battery to replace, and work reliably in extreme temperatures. Simplex and Kaba models are common in this category. They are a practical choice for doors where wiring is not available and a smartphone integration is not required. GTA Lockman installs and services both types across the GTA.
In most cases, yes. Electronic keypad deadbolts are designed to fit standard door prep dimensions: a 2-1/8 inch bore with a standard backset of either 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches. If your door already has a deadbolt, the keypad model will typically fit the same holes. Our technician will confirm the fit when quoting the job. Mechanical push-button locks may have different installation requirements depending on the model.
Most electronic keypad locks include a low-battery alert that appears on the keypad display or through an audible signal well before the battery is fully depleted. If the battery does run out completely, nearly all models include a physical key override cylinder so you can still enter with a backup key. Some models also include a terminal on the outside of the lock where a 9V battery can be briefly connected to power the pad for one entry. We walk you through all backup options at the time of installation.
This varies by model. Entry-level residential keypad deadbolts typically hold between 6 and 10 user codes. Mid-range and smart lock models can store 30 to 100 codes, with some Wi-Fi connected models offering unlimited code management through a smartphone app. If you need to manage access for multiple people, such as rental tenants, cleaning staff, or family members, a model with broader code capacity is worth selecting. We can advise on suitable options when you call.
Yes. Keypad locks are commonly used on commercial interior doors, office entry doors, and staff access points. For high-traffic exterior doors, a commercial-grade electronic lock or access control system is a better fit than a residential keypad model. GTA Lockman handles both residential keypad installations and commercial locksmith services across the GTA. We can assess the door and recommend the appropriate hardware for the application.
It depends on the application. Mechanical push-button locks such as the Simplex L1000 or Kaba series have no battery and no electronics, so they work in any temperature and require no maintenance beyond occasional lubrication. They are a strong choice for garages, utility rooms, and doors where a power source is unavailable. Electronic keypad locks offer more features such as auto-lock timers, audit trails, and remote access, but they require battery management. See our mechanical keyless locks page for more on the battery-free option.
