Older and newer Toyota keys
Older Toyotas used a plain metal key that only needs cutting. Most Toyotas from the late 1990s on have a chip in the key, and the engine will not start unless the car reads it. That is why a key cut without programming can turn the ignition and still not start the car.
Newer models with push-button start use a smart key. The car looks for the fob when you touch the door handle or press start. We pair the new chip key, remote or smart key with the car through the diagnostic port, then test it with you.

Cut and program at the car
A technician comes to the car, cuts the blade and pairs the chip, remote or smart key with the car.
Test everything
We test the engine start, the door buttons and the trunk with you before we leave.
Before we cut or program a key, we ask for the vehicle registration and photo ID that matches it. For a leased or company vehicle, bring documents that show you are allowed to use it. Car keys come with a 3-month warranty, and car key programming comes with a 12-month warranty.
