What Lock Picking Means for a Licensed Locksmith

In the context of a licensed locksmith, lock picking refers to manipulating the internal components of a cylinder to retract the bolt without the original key. The goal is to open the lock without damaging it, so the hardware remains usable after the job. This is the preferred method when a customer is locked out and does not have a spare key, because it avoids the cost and inconvenience of replacing the lock.

Pin tumbler cylinders, which are the most common type used in residential deadbolts and door knob sets across Toronto and the GTA, work by requiring a key to align a series of spring-loaded pin stacks at the shear line inside the plug. When all pins are at the correct height, the plug rotates and the bolt retracts. A locksmith using a tension wrench and pick applies slight rotational pressure to the plug while manipulating each pin stack individually until all pins reach the shear line. The process requires a steady hand, the right tool geometry for the keyway, and a good understanding of how the specific cylinder is constructed.

Which Locks Can Be Picked and Which Cannot

Not every lock opens the same way. Understanding the hardware on your door helps set realistic expectations for the lockout opening method.

Standard Pin Tumbler Cylinders

The most common lock type in residential Toronto homes and commercial properties. Found in Schlage B-series deadbolts, Kwikset knob sets, and most standard door hardware. The pin tumbler cylinder is the most practical lock to pick non-destructively. With the correct picks and a properly sized tension wrench for the keyway, a trained technician can open the majority of standard pin tumbler locks without damage. After opening, the cylinder can be rekeyed on site so your existing hardware continues to function.

High-Security Cylinders

High-security cylinders from manufacturers such as Mul-T-Lock, Medeco, and ASSA Abloy use additional security features including rotating pin elements, sidebar mechanisms, and patented keyway profiles specifically designed to resist picking tools. These cylinders can often be opened by alternative non-destructive methods such as decoding or impressioning, but the process takes considerably longer and requires specialist tools. If non-destructive opening is not viable, controlled drilling at specific points preserves as much of the hardware as possible.

Disk and Puck Padlocks

Disk padlocks and puck locks used on storage units, garages, and hasps have a circular body with a short, concealed shackle. The keyway is often protected by a cover plate. These locks can frequently be picked or bypassed without the key, though the compact keyway design means specific tools are required. Where picking is not viable, the puck body can be cut at a specific point to separate the shackle without damaging the hasp or the door it is attached to. This is the most common scenario for storage unit lockouts.

Keypad and Electronic Locks

Keypad and electronic locks have no keyway to pick. Access depends on a correct code or credential rather than a mechanical cylinder. When the code is forgotten or a battery fails without a backup power option, the approach depends on the specific model. Many electronic locks include a physical key override cylinder on the back of the unit. If a spare key is available, entry is straightforward. If not, the key override cylinder can be picked using the same methods as any pin tumbler cylinder. See our keypad lock service page for more detail on electronic lock lockouts.

What Happens During a Lockout Call

When you call GTA Lockman for a lockout, the dispatcher will ask for your location, the type of lock on the door, and the address. A technician is dispatched to your location. On arrival, the technician will ask to see identification confirming you are the resident or the authorized occupant of the property before starting work. This step protects you as much as it protects the property.

The technician assesses the lock and determines the best opening method for the specific hardware. For standard pin tumbler cylinders in good condition, picking is typically the first approach because it is the reliableest and leaves the hardware intact. If the cylinder has been damaged, is seized from weather, or is a high-security model that resists picking tools, the technician will discuss alternative methods with you before proceeding.

After the door is open, the technician will confirm the lock is still functioning correctly. If you want the lock rekeyed so the lost key no longer works, or if you want to upgrade the hardware, both services can be completed during the same visit. The flat-rate price is confirmed before any work begins.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases, no. Non-destructive picking using a tension wrench and picks does not damage the cylinder or the lock body when done correctly on a standard pin tumbler lock. The pins are manipulated to the shear line, the plug rotates, and the bolt retracts. After opening, the cylinder is fully functional and can be rekeyed so the lost key no longer works. If the cylinder is already worn or damaged before the locksmith arrives, picking may reveal that, but the picking process itself is not the cause.
For a standard residential pin tumbler deadbolt in good condition, picking typically takes between 5 and 20 minutes depending on the cylinder brand, the number of pins, and whether any security features such as spool pins are present. High-security cylinders take longer. If picking is not viable for the specific hardware, the technician will advise on an alternative approach and give you an updated time estimate before proceeding.
In Ontario, lock picking tools are regulated under the Security Devices Act. Possession and use of lock picks for legitimate locksmith work is permitted for licensed locksmiths. GTA Lockman technicians are licensed under Ontario’s locksmith regulations and carry identification confirming their credentials. Before opening any residential or commercial lock, the technician will verify your identity as the occupant or authorized person at the property.
If the cylinder design resists picking, or if the lock is in a condition that makes non-destructive opening impractical, the technician will discuss alternative methods. These include decoding the key from the cylinder profile, impressioning a new key, or controlled drilling at the specific failure point in the cylinder. Drilling is always a last resort because it destroys the cylinder plug, requiring a replacement cylinder or full lock. When drilling is necessary, we carry replacement hardware on the van and can install it during the same visit.
If you lost the key that caused the lockout, rekeying the cylinder after opening is a sensible step. A lost key is a key someone else may find and use. Rekeying changes the internal pin configuration so the old key no longer operates the lock, and a new key is cut on site. The cost of rekeying is considerably less than replacing the lock hardware. If you want to upgrade the lock at the same time, our technicians can advise on options and complete the installation during the same visit. See our rekeying service page for details.
